In an announcement on Monday, Oct. 28, Westchester officials said more than 100 registered and non-registered sex offenders on probation within the county will have to attend an educational program at the Westchester County Courthouse in White Plains on Thursday, Oct. 31 from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.
The program is intended to teach offenders about the impact of their actions and will include "accounts of devastation" perpetrated on children and adult victims.
"Our top priority in Westchester County will always be our children, and we are doing everything we can to ensure they are safe when they go trick-or-treating on Halloween night," said Westchester County Executive George Latimer, who added, "Parents should remind their kids to travel in groups and come home at a reasonable hour, but they shouldn’t have to worry about the potential dangers of sex offenders. This program guarantees that all local sex offenders will be accounted for in Westchester County."
To make sure all offenders are accounted for, Westchester probation officers will be out in communities tracking any down who do not attend the program.
Additionally, after the event is finished, sex offenders will not be allowed to take public transportation home; instead, any offenders who need a ride home can get one from a probation officer.
The program will mark the 18th such event held in Westchester on Halloween.
